Underglaze Painting Class
Service Description
Discover the painterly possibilities of ceramics in this focused 2-hour underglaze painting class. Using layers of underglaze, you’ll learn to transform your clay surface into a richly detailed artwork—whether you're going for delicate linework or lush, expressive color. We’ll begin with a light sketch directly on your clay form using a regular HB or 2HB pencil—don’t worry, the graphite will burn out in the bisque firing. Then, we’ll layer underglazes much like watercolors or acrylics, building depth and detail as the surface absorbs the color. Artists with painting experience will find familiar ground here, though ceramic surfaces come with their own unique quirks: colors apply matte and subdued, and only reveal their full brilliance after the final glaze firing. Because underglaze absorbs quickly into the clay, it’s possible to paint sharp lines, complex designs, and subtle gradations without bleeding—a perfect match for both illustrators and abstract thinkers alike. What is Underglaze Painting? Underglaze painting is a decorative ceramic technique where color is applied to unfired or bisque-fired clay before being sealed with a clear glaze and fired again. Unlike surface glazes that sit on top, underglazes fuse with the clay body, resulting in vibrant, lasting color with a painterly feel. It’s a powerful way to bring narrative, texture, and emotion to your ceramic work. Come with ideas—or just curiosity—and leave with a new skill and a beautifully painted ceramic piece, ready for its final firing. Additional Information: Your creations will be ready for pickup from the studio approximately 2-3 weeks from the workshop date. You should receive a pickup email when they're finished, but if it is eaten by filters, please come by the studio after 4 weeks to check on your pots or send us an email. Any pottery left at the studio 6 weeks after the workshop date will be donated, so please pick up your work in time! YOU MUST SIGN YOUR POTTERY. Denver Ceramic Studio is not liable for lost pieces that are unsigned and mistakenly claimed by another student. Not all pieces are guaranteed to make it out of the kiln if instructions are not followed. Inconsistencies in thickness can cause cracks or even shattering in the firing process. However, the goal is to just have fun, so don’t stress about it!
