Using layers of underglaze, you’ll learn to transform your clay surface into a richly detailed artwork—whether you're going for delicate linework or lush, expressive color. We’ll begin with a light sketch directly on your clay form using a regular HB or 2HB pencil—don’t worry, the graphite will burn out in the bisque firing. Then, we’ll layer underglazes much like watercolors or acrylics, building depth and detail as the surface absorbs the color. Artists with painting experience will find familiar ground here, though ceramic surfaces come with their own unique quirks: colors apply matte and subdued, and only reveal their full brilliance after the final glaze firing. Because underglaze absorbs quickly into the clay, it’s possible to paint sharp lines, complex designs, and subtle gradations without bleeding—a perfect match for both illustrators and abstract thinkers alike.
